Ductless Mini-Split Repair and Installation in Los Angeles

Mini-splits are the go-to way to cool LA homes that were built without ductwork: Craftsman bungalows, Spanish Revival houses, converted garages and upstairs rooms that central air never reaches. They are efficient, but they fail in their own ways, and they need a technician who works on them every week.

  • Leaks, drain pumps and error codes diagnosed properly
  • Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, LG, Gree and more
  • Installs planned around your home, not just the cheapest wall

Repairs

Common Mini-Split Problems and What Causes Them

What you noticeMost likely cause
Water dripping from the indoor unitClogged drain line, failed condensate pump, unit not level, or a frozen coil melting
Blinking lights or an error codeThe unit is reporting a fault, such as a sensor, communication or pressure error. The code points to where to look.
Musty or “dirty socks” smellMold and slime on the blower wheel and coil inside the head. Needs a proper deep clean, not just a filter rinse.
Running but not coolingDirty filters and coil, low refrigerant from a flare leak, outdoor unit not starting
Outdoor unit will not startCapacitor, control board, power issue or a fault reported by the indoor unit
One zone works, another does notFault in that indoor head, its sensor or its line set; communication issue on multi-zone systems
Remote not workingBatteries, a remote set to the wrong mode, or a failed receiver on the head

Water leaks are the number one mini-split call. Many heads mounted high on interior walls use a small condensate pump to push water out. When that pump fails, water drips down the wall. Turn the unit off and put a towel under it until it is fixed.

Why LA uses them

Why Mini-Splits Fit So Many LA Homes

  • No ducts to install. Craftsman and Spanish Revival homes in Highland Park, Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Mid-City were often built with wall heaters and no ductwork. Adding ducts means opening walls and ceilings.
  • Room-by-room control. Cool the bedrooms at night without cooling the whole house.
  • Additions, garages and ADUs. A converted garage or backyard unit can get its own system without touching the main house.
  • Heating included. Most mini-splits are heat pumps, so they can replace an old wall heater too.
  • Historic districts. In an HPOZ, placing the outdoor unit out of view from the street matters. Plan it before you buy.

Installation

What a Good Mini-Split Install Looks Like

  • Sized per room with a load calculation. An oversized head short-cycles and leaves the room clammy.
  • Indoor heads placed for airflow, not just where the wall is easiest to drill.
  • Drain planned first. Gravity drains wherever possible, so you are not relying on a pump.
  • Clean line set runs with proper covers, insulation and flare connections made with a torque wrench, since sloppy flares are a classic leak point.
  • Vacuum and pressure test before releasing refrigerant.
  • Permit pulled where required, with LADBS in the City of LA.

Rebates

LADWP Rebates for Ductless Heat Pumps

For LADWP customers, ductless mini-split heat pumps earn the largest rebate in the Consumer Rebate Program: $1,500 to $2,500 per ton, depending on efficiency tier. A 2 ton system can therefore earn $3,000 to $5,000 back.

The rules: you need an AHRI certificate, an itemized paid invoice and a final LADBS permit, and you must apply within 12 months. ADUs and new construction are excluded, which surprises a lot of homeowners adding a backyard unit. Funding is first-come, first-served, so check ladwp.com/CRP before you buy.

Care

Keeping a Mini-Split Running Well

  • Rinse the indoor filters every 2 to 4 weeks in summer. They clog quickly and are easy to slide out.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear of plants and debris.
  • Book a professional deep clean every year or two to clear the blower wheel and coil. It removes the mold that causes musty smells.
  • Do not ignore a new drip or a new error code. Small leaks damage drywall over time.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does mini-split repair cost?

National 2026 data puts most mini-split repairs at about $100 to $600 for parts like capacitors and fan motors, $150 to $450 for a refrigerant recharge after a leak repair, and $1,200 to $4,500 for a compressor. LA prices usually sit toward the higher end.

Why is my mini-split leaking water?

Usually a clogged drain line or a failed condensate pump. A frozen coil or an indoor unit that is not level can also cause it. Turn it off and protect the wall until it is fixed.

Why does my mini-split smell musty?

Mold and slime grow on the blower wheel and coil inside the indoor unit. Cleaning the filter alone will not fix it. It needs a deep clean.

How much does a mini-split cost to install in Los Angeles?

A single-zone mini-split typically costs about $4,000 to $7,000 installed in LA in 2026, and a multi-zone system about $10,000 to $18,000.

Does LADWP give rebates for mini-splits?

Yes. Ductless mini-split heat pumps can earn $1,500 to $2,500 per ton through LADWP’s Consumer Rebate Program, with a final permit and AHRI certificate. ADUs and new construction are excluded.

Can a mini-split heat my home too?

Most mini-splits are heat pumps, so yes. In LA’s mild winters they can replace an old wall heater for most homes.
