The short answer
Is a Broken AC an Emergency?
It is an emergency when there is a safety risk or a health risk. A burning smell, sparks, water pouring through a ceiling, or a home that is getting dangerously hot for a baby, an older adult, a pregnant person, someone with a heart or lung condition, or pets all count. In those cases, call now and ask for the first available visit.
If the house is safe, everyone can stay cool, and nothing is smoking or leaking, it is usually smarter to switch the AC off and book a morning or same-day visit. After-hours visits often cost more, and a system that sits off overnight will not get worse.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Burning smell, smoke or sparks | Turn the AC off at the thermostat and the breaker. Call now. If there is fire or heavy smoke, call 911. |
| Water through the ceiling or from the air handler | Turn the AC off, catch the water, move valuables. Call now. Attic drain overflows can damage drywall quickly. |
| Hot home with a vulnerable person | Call now. Move them to the coolest room, use fans and cool water, and call 211 for the nearest cooling center. |
| Outdoor unit humming, fan not spinning | Turn it off to protect the compressor. Usually safe to book the earliest slot. |
| Ice on the lines | Turn cooling off, fan on to thaw. Book a same-day visit. |
| AC simply not cooling, home bearable | Book a same-day repair in the morning to avoid after-hours fees. |
Costs
What Emergency AC Repair Costs in LA
The repair itself costs about the same at 9pm as at 9am. A capacitor is still roughly $150 to $400, and a clogged drain is still $100 to $300. What changes is the visit fee. Most LA companies charge more for evenings, Sundays and holidays, on top of the standard $70 to $250 diagnostic range.
Before anyone is sent, you should know three things: the after-hours visit fee, whether it is credited toward the repair, and the realistic arrival time. If a company will not tell you the fee on the phone, call someone else.

Right now
What to Do While You Wait
- Switch off a system that is humming, smelling or leaking. Running a stuck compressor or a short-circuiting motor can turn a small repair into a big one.
- Close blinds and curtains on sun-facing windows, and keep doors to hot rooms shut.
- Move to the lowest, shadiest room. Upstairs and attic rooms in Valley homes heat up first.
- Use fans to move air across damp skin and drink water regularly. Fans alone do not prevent heat illness once indoor temperatures get very high.
- Know the warning signs. Heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea and headache can mean heat exhaustion. Confusion, fainting or hot, dry skin can mean heat stroke, which is a 911 emergency.
- Find a cooling center. LA County opens cooling centers during heat events. Call 211 for the nearest one.
After an outage
AC Will Not Restart After a Power Outage?
Heat waves strain the grid, and LADWP and SCE outages during heat events can hit tens of thousands of customers. When the power comes back, do not hammer the thermostat:
- Set the thermostat to off and wait about 5 minutes so the refrigerant pressures can equalize.
- Check the AC breaker in your panel and the disconnect next to the outdoor unit.
- Turn the thermostat back to cool and set it a few degrees below room temperature.
- If the outdoor unit hums but will not start, or nothing happens at all, turn it off and call. Power surges and brownouts often damage the capacitor, contactor or control board.
Why LA breaks at night
Why So Many LA ACs Fail in the Evening
The hardest hours for an air conditioner are late afternoon into early evening, when the house has soaked up heat all day and the outdoor unit is sitting in 100°F plus air. In the August 2026 heat wave the San Fernando Valley reached about 110°F, and the National Weather Service warned that Woodland Hills, Northridge, Van Nuys and Chatsworth could reach 112°F.
Valley nights often stay warm, so the system never gets a break. Weak capacitors, tired fan motors and clogged coils tend to give out right around dinnertime, exactly when most offices close. That is why it pays to have a number you can call that tells you honestly what is possible tonight.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there 24-hour AC repair in Los Angeles?
Some companies take calls around the clock, but technician availability late at night is limited everywhere. Call (213) 659-0061 and you will be told the earliest realistic arrival time and any after-hours fee before anyone is sent.
How much does emergency AC repair cost?
The repair costs about the same as daytime work, but the visit fee is usually higher for evenings, Sundays and holidays. Standard LA diagnostic fees run $70 to $250, and you should be told the after-hours fee on the phone.
When should I call for emergency AC repair?
Call right away for a burning smell, smoke, sparks, water coming through a ceiling, or a hot home with a baby, senior, pregnant person or someone with a medical condition. Otherwise, a morning same-day visit is often cheaper.
Should I turn my AC off if it is making a humming noise?
Yes. A humming outdoor unit with a fan that will not spin usually means a failed capacitor or a stuck motor. Running it can overheat the compressor.
What should I do if my AC breaks during a heat wave?
Switch it off if it is humming, smelling or leaking, close the blinds, move to the coolest room, drink water, and call for service. If anyone becomes confused or faints, call 911. Call 211 for the nearest LA County cooling center.
